'K7'이라는 차명에서 첫 글자 ‘K’는 기아자동차(KIA)와 대한민국(KOREA), ‘강함, 지배, 통치’를 의미하는 그리스어 ‘Kratos’, 다이나믹한 역동성을 뜻하는 영어 ‘Kinetic’ 등 단어의 첫 번째 알파벳에서 따왔으며, 숫자 ‘7’은 준대형 차급을 의미한다.

지난 4월 서울모터쇼에서 최초로 선보인 콘셉트카 VG의 디자인을 그대로 이어 받은 'K7'은 ‘빛’을 단순한 조명이 아닌 디자인 요소로 활용해 ‘빛’과 ‘선’의 조화를 추구한 것이 특징이다.
'K7'은 쎄타(θ)Ⅱ 2.4 엔진을 비롯 뮤우(μ) 2.7, 람다(λ)Ⅱ 3.5 등 3가지 가솔린 엔진과 뮤우 2.7 LPI 엔진 등 총 4가지 엔진 라인업을 갖췄으며, 6단 자동변속기를 장착해 뛰어난 연비는 물론, 탁월한 정숙성과 내구성까지 갖추었다.
주력 모델인 뮤우 2.7 MPI 엔진은 최고 출력 200 마력, 최대토크 26.0kg•m, 연비 11.0km/ℓ를, 세타Ⅱ 2.4 엔진은 최고 출력 180마력, 최대토크 23.5kg•m, 연비 11.8km/ℓ 등 동급 최고의 성능을 자랑한다.
현대·기아차 최초로 탑재되는 람다Ⅱ 3.5 엔진은 고성능, 저연비는 물론 정숙성과 내구성, 그리고 친환경성까지 갖추고 있으며 최고 출력 290마력, 최대토크 34.5kg•m, 연비 10.6km/ℓ를 달성했다.
또한, 준대형차 최초로 2.4 및 2.7모델에 진폭감응형 댐퍼(ASD:Amplitude Selective Damper)를, 3.5 모델에는 전자제어 서스펜션(ECS:Electronic Control Suspension)을 기본으로 장착해 탁월한 조정 안정성 및 승차감을 확보했다.
이와 더불어 'K7'은 탑승자의 안전성을 최우선으로 고려해 운전석, 동승석 에어백을 전 모델에 기본 적용하고 최대 8개의 에어백을 장착, 최고의 충돌 안전 성능을 확보했으며 차체자세제어장치(VDC)를 가솔린 전 트림에 기본 적용해 예방 안전성을 크게 높였다.
아울러 최첨단 신사양과 하이테크 신기술들을 대거 적용해 더욱 편리하고 쾌적한 드라이빙 환경을 제공한다.
세계 최초로 적용된 'K7'의 웰컴 시스템(Welcome System)은 스마트키를 소지한 운전자가 차량에 접근하면 아웃사이드 미러가 펼쳐지며 도어 손잡이의 조명이 점등되고 도어 손잡이의 잠금 장치를 열었을 때에도 실내등, 크롬가니쉬 무드조명, 풋램프 등이 켜져 운전자에게 감성을 만족시켜 주는 신기술이다.
또 루프 전체를 글라스로 처리한 3피스 타입의 파노라마 선루프와 김서림을 자동 방지하는 오토 디포그 시스템, 클러스터 이오나이저 등 첨단 공조 시스템이 적용돼 준대형 럭셔리 세단에 걸맞은 쾌적한 실내 공간을 제공한다.
